Clare (Kritz) Schaeffer

SCHAEFFER Clare (nee Kritz), 92, died March 30, 2011 in Tucson. Born the fifth of six children to Cantor Aaron Kritz and Anna Denoff Kritz in Chicago. Clare married Albert Schaeffer in 1942, a year after he enlisted in the Army. When he returned from three years of WWII combat in Europe, they raised two sons, David and Leonard, then resettled in Tucson. There, Albert resumed his legal practice until his death ten years ago, while Clare worked at the career she had begun in Chicago, as a gerontology therapist, and continued into her 80's. Based at Tucson's Handmaker Center for the Aged, she developed her innovative "Reality Orientation Through Music" therapy system, to stimulate physical and mental activity and awareness in the residents. Her highly successful results led to demonstration tours in Geriatric Centers across the US and in Europe, where her techniques are still practiced. Meanwhile, her two sons collaborated in recording a collection of original songs, written and sung by Leonard, Today, 40 years later, their CD is still internationally marketed. Sadly, both sons died at too young an age, but each first married and were fathers of Clare's three beloved grandchildren, Amy Fotino, now in Warwick, New York with her husband, Joseph, and their three sons, Andrew, 14, Nick, 11 and Joey, 8; Emily Bauer, in Richmond, Virginia, with husband, Matthew and their year old son, William and Avram Schaeffer, in Austin, Texas with wife, Shaina and daughter, Sadie, almost 2. 23 years ago, Clare and Albert, endowed a Scholarship Fund at the U. of Arizona in memory of their two sons, the Leonard and David Schaeffer Guitar Competition. It was their hope that this Fund could continue helping talented musicians launch their careers for many more years, As Clare asked, her memorial service will be private and her ashes will be scattered in Sabino Canyon near those of her sons, by Clare's brother, Robert and her loving and devoted friends, Carolee and Daniel Asia, Diane Simmons and Robert Zweig. Clare also asked that a notice be included in her obituary, thanking and sending her love to Mary Schmitt, Pamela Lusk, Suellen Aronson and Patricia Singleton, who cared for and nurtured Clare for many months with sensitivity, concern and love, right up to the end. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

Reverend John Clinton Fowler

Reverend Canon John Clinton Fowler died on March 19, 2011, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, his home since 1986 when he retired as the founding rector of St. Michael and All Angel's Episcopal Church in Tucson. Father Fowler was born July 29, 1924 in Douglas, Arizona. He moved with his family to Tucson as a young child, where he grew up in downtown neighborhoods and attended local schools: Sam Hughes Elementary, Tucson High School (class of 1942) and the University of Arizona. His education was interrupted when he was drafted and sent to serve in the 76th Infantry. He lost a leg in combat in Germany and received a, for his service. He returned to the University, after graduating, he attended General Theological Seminary in New York City. After returning to Arizona, Father Fowler served as rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bisbee, after which he returned to Tucson in 1953 to become head of the newly-established parish of St. Michael and All Angels. He was the first native-born Arizonan to be ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church. In that position, Father Fowler distinguished himself and his parish as leaders in social reform efforts: the civil rights movement, other anti-war activities, particularly during the years of the Viet Nam War, the farm workers' struggle led by Cesar Chavez, nuclear disarmament and many other civic issues. Canon Fowler's commitment to these often controversial issues arose out of his lifelong devotion to the Church's teaching of social justice. Under his leadership St. Michael's became Tucson's leading exponent of the Anglo-catholic tradition, which combines this teaching with a serious approach to formal ceremony in liturgical worship. While at St. Michael's, Father Fowler established a parochial school where his legacy remains strong. He will be remembered by his students and teachers for his commitment to a solid classical approach to education and for his colorful personality, strong opinions and uncompromising style. A piano player with a prolific memory for song, and a sometime amateur actor who had memorized hundreds of literary and dramatic monologues, he was endlessly entertaining and inspiring to his students. Father Fowler's commitment to activism and peace continued until the end of his life. For nearly ten years he attended a peace vigil every week, sometimes alone, on a street corner in downtown Allentown, Pennsylvania. During his retirement years he volunteered regularly at a nearby home for elderly veterans. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial gifts in his name may be made to the Father Fowler Fund for Social Justice at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Arrangements by JOHN F. HERRON FUNERAL HOME.

Trudi Kies

Trudi Kies 10/22/2010 Our Beloved Sister, and a friend went home to be with the Lord on October 22, 2010. All her friends remember her with fond Memories, since her sudden passing six months ago. Trudi, was born and grew up in Stuttgart, Germany. At an early age, she demonstrated her love for her overseas travel and to study in the USA. She graduated with a degree in finance from the University of Arizona. She was a bright student and continued to excel in everything she put her efforts into----including 35 year stint in the Mortgage Industry. Trudi's mortgage banking career, spanned as a Senior loan officer, underwriter and manager. But she cherished her role the most, as the Senior Loan officer-According to her colleagues and managers, she was the best of the best. She never took her work lightly or for granted. For her, it was "Her calling" not just a job. She loved working with people from all walks of life- helping them to realize their dreams-whether it was purchasing a home or refinancing their mortgages. She was adept at making Impossible, possible for her clients, who held her in high esteem. She was an indefatigable worker-coming early to work and at times working into wee hours of the night to get the loan files ready for close of escrow. She was a model of a consummate dedicated worker to her clients. Her commitment to them was her bond. She was a loan officer extraordinaire and darling to her colleagues and clients. Trudi touched friends and colleagues and her clients with gentle compassionate kindness. She knew no stranger and accepted and embraced people from all walks of life. Trudi always made them feel so special. Trudi's favorite inspirational sayings were: "Don't sweat the small stuff" and "Everything is how it should be". Her philosophy was simple: our job is no different than a Doctor or an Engineer, Business Executive Real Estate Broker, lawyer or any other professions and that was to assist individuals with their hopes and dreams and make it happen. Through out her career in the mortgage industry with various companies, including her last 16 years with the Chase Home Mortgage, --she was their top ranked Loan Officer and was inducted into their Leader's Club for most of those years. She served as an ultimate role model as a devoted loan officer, devoted wife, trusted friend and and a civic member of the Tucson Community. It is often said, that God needs good decent people in his kingdom, but we shall all miss her dear presence. Nevertheless, her essence will remain with us forever. Trudi We will always Love you and miss you dearly. Thank you for blessing us with your energetic and brilliant intelligent spirit.
