Bernard W. Ethington

Bernard W. Ethington was born August 15, 1925 in State Center, Iowa and passed away peacefully on May 8, 2011. Bernie graduated from State Center High School In 1943, and served in the Pacific during, in the, earning six battle stars. A Tucson resident since 1953, Bernie spent his working career as an electrician and a member of the IBEW Local 570. He was a long time member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and was an active volunteer at TMC hospital for many years. Bernie's greatest passion was flying, completing several cross country flights in his airplane. Bernie was a loving husband and devoted father and gave endlessly of his time to family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Judy; two grandchildren, Tim and Katy and his surviving extended family, whom he loved dearly. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 830 N. First Avenue, 85719. CLARA BELLE FISHER Clara Belle Fisher, age 97, a 12-year resident of Bullhead City, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Bullhead City, Ariz., at her Assisted Living Home, Angel’s Touch. Clara was born August 7, 1913, in Los Angeles, Calif., to John and Carrie Rey. Clara worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, in the Accounting Dept., until she retired. Clara was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in Downey, Calif., until she moved to Bullhead City to be a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. She loved to sing and draw. She loved being a homemaker, and was a great cook. She also knitted Christmas sweaters every year for every member of the family. Clara was also an avid sports fan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, George, Sr.; their son, George, Jr.; her parents, John and Carrie Rey; and several of her siblings. Clara is survived by her daughter, Yvonne (John) Morales of Bullhead City; twin sisters, Alice (Bob) Pittenger of McMinnville, Ore., and Aileen Wolter of Santa Paula, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Chris (Alison) Patton of Park City, Utah, Sabrina Gannon of Huntington Beach, Calif., Alison (Corrado) Laurenza of Bullhead City, David Patton of Bullhead City, Cathy (Richard) Melendez of Chino Hills, Calif., Norma Sepulveda of La Mirada, Calif., Linda Steider of White Salmon, Wash., Donna (Jeff) Gardner of Pine Valley, Utah, and Maria (Jeff) Mention of Newbury Park, Calif.; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9, 2011, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1691 N. Oatman Road in Bullhead City, immediately followed by Mass. DANNY R. JOHNSON Danny R. Johnson, age 70, died May 7, 2011, in Bullhead City, Ariz. Danny was born June 16, 1940, in Jonesboro, Ark., to James Hill Johnson and Betty Henry. He married Martha Ann Dupree Royall, on Sept. 23, 1967, in Torrance, Calif. After living in Garden Grove, Calif. for 25+ years, he retired to Ft. Mohave, Ariz., 5-1Ž2 years ago. He retired from Reynolds Metals Can Plant in Torrance, Calif., with 30 years of service. He enjoyed playing craps, watching baseball and was an avid BBQ’er. Danny’s eyes always twinkled with the mention of his grandchildren, Robert, Justene, Nickalis, John Jr. and greatgrandson, Liam. He adored and loved his wife, Martha, AKA his personal nurse. They had two daughters, Vivian Darlene and Jammie, whom Danny loved very much. He was proud to be part of the Royall Clan. Danny and his BBQ Ribs will be missed! Danny was preceded in death by his daughter Jammie; parents, James and Betty; three brothers, Eddie, Bobby and Donald; sister, Nancy; and granddaughter, Justene. He is survived by his wife, Martha; child, Vivian Darlene (John) of Powers, Calif; brother, Jimmy Johnson, of Hanford, Calif.; three grandchildren, Robert, Nickals, and John, Jr; and greatgrandson, Liam. DARRYL EDWARD THOMPSON Darryl Edward Thompson, age 56, a 4-year resident of Bullhead City, Ariz., passed away May 2, 2011, in Scottsdale, Ariz., under the loving care of his family and Hospice of the Valley. He was born January 6, 1955, in Indianapolis, Ind. He married Sonja Barker on February 16, 1974, in Indianapolis. Darryl worked in the aviation industry for 34 years, and was recently named Arizona Airport Executive of the Year by the Arizona Airports Association. He served as Assistant Airport Director at Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport from March of 2007 until his passing. He will be sadly missed by his family as well as his friends. His family will carry his memory in their hearts as a loving and faithful husband, and kind and compassionate father, who lived life to the fullest. Darryl is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sonja; his son, Chad (Jennifer) Thompson; and daughter, Sarah Thompson. DERWIN LEE SELF Derwin Lee Self, age 60, a 15-year resident of Mohave Valley, Ariz. passed away suddenly and unexpectedly Friday, May 6, 2011, in Fort Mohave, Ariz. He was born April 1, 1951 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Floyd and Anastasia Natalie Self. Derwin was a Burlington Northern Sante Fe Locomotive Engineer for the past 30 years while working out of the Needles, Calif. terminal running the trains between Needles and Winslow for the past 15 years. He served as President of the local Brotherhood of Local Engineers chapter in Needles for the past several years, and was a household name here in the area for fixing anyone, and everyone’s, computer. Derwin was proud to have served in the Navy and loved to talk about his time in Greece and Puerto Rico and was enthusiastically planning his retirement to the island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. He had such an enthusiasm for life and interests in anything and everything that it’s impossible to list how many people’s lives he has touched in so many different ways. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, William, and his parents Floyd and Natalie Self. Derwin is survived by his wife of 26 years, Joanne; three sons, Douglas and Daniel Self of Mohave Valley, Ariz., and William Rose of Needles, Calif.; two daughters, Rhyannon Rose, (currently stationed at Kunsan AFB in Korea), and Poppy (Lee) Perfect of Oak Hills, Calif.; two grandchildren Brooke and Ashton Perfect of Oak Hills Calif.; two cousins, Al and Tari Malon of Ooltawah, Tenn.; and the many members of his extended family. Doris Elaine Johnson 81, of Tucson, AZ went home to her Lord and Savior on May 9, 2011. Doris was born June 3, 1929 in Thief River Falls, MN; the youngest of three children to parents, Alexander and Cora Swanson. She married E. Harris Johnson on October 28, 1950 in St. Hilaire, MN. She gave birth to Daniel and David. It was a match made in Heaven that lasted 60 years. Harris will greatly miss her. She is survived by her family: Dan and Stephanie, Dave and T'risa; grandchildren, Jeremy, Kim, Jordan, Matt, Cassie, Chris, Kari and Kevin; great-grandchildren, Jack, Sydney, Ryan, Emma, TY, Finley, Brooklyn and Remi. As a child, Doris enjoyed life on her family's farm. She often rode her horse Tootsie to school when the weather permitted; otherwise she and her siblings traveled to school on a horse-drawn sleigh. She was raised in a strong Christian home, and was known for her deep faith and ongoing prayers and kindness for her family and dear friends. Aside from her full-time job as a loving mother and devoted wife, Doris loved serving humanity as an LPN. Her unconditional love will set standard for many generations to come. Her family and friends will miss her tremendously. Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2011 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. MORRIS, Garyof Gilbert died unexpectedly of coronary artery disease at the age of 56 on May 1, 2010. A Memorial service and burial took place at Queen of Heaven Mortuary in Mesa on May 6, 2010. He lived most of his life in Gilbert, Mesa, and Tempe. Gary was born in Brockton, MA, lived in Rockland, MA, and moved to Arizona in August 1961 at the age of eight with his family. He graduated from Moon Valley High School in northwest Phoenix in 1971 and moved to Tempe in 1972. Gary was close to his family all his life. With his parents Conrad C. Morris deceased September 29, 1993 and his mother, Mary, he co-owned and managed a Baskin-Robbins ice cream franchise at University Drive and Alma School Road in Mesa from 1973 to 1978. He was employed at the former Motorola Semiconductor Plant in Tempe as a manufacturing support technician from April 1976 to May 2001.Gary loved cars, boating on local Phoenix area lakes, vacations in San Diego, the Midwest, and Florida, and decorating and maintaining the home he had shared with his former wife, Carol Kemmer, and daughter, Lisa, in Gilbert. Mary Greene Poston*

After graduating from Aitkin County High School, she went on to graduate from Abbott Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. Mary spent the majority of her career as a surgical nurse for Dr. David McKay. She also served as Worthy Grand Matron of Eastern Star in 1958 and was a member of Daughters of the Nile Sapphira Temple Dancers., Mary was happily married to Don Greene from 1945 until his death in 1989. They divided their retirement years between their home on the Missouri River in Wolf Creek Canyon and Yuma, AZ. Mary loved entertaining friends and family and it was often said by friends, "All roads lead to Mary's house." The fulfillment of her life was the enjoyment of her four grandchildren and her five great-grandchildren.


 


 

Maynard Zeno Joerger

Maynard Zeno Joerger 85, marched right up to heaven May 12, 2011, after a valiant battle with renal disease. He faced Dialysis three times a week for 15 years. Until recently, he also volunteered at local hospitals, working in their kitchens after and between treatments. Maynard was born in Lindsey, NE, February 23, 1926 to Xavier and Ellen, the third of ten children. He grew up in S.D. and in 1948, entered Techney Seminary in Illinois and lived as a Brother. The Army drafted him in 1954, when he joined the 10th Division Infantry at Ft. Riley, KS. Maynard spent over 20 years supporting our country, sometimes feeding up to 2,000 soldiers a day. He traveled the world, spending three and a half years in Viet Nam. He married Evelyn Pupa in 1971 in Hawaii, moving to Chicago after his retirement. He worked as a Security Guard at Northern Trust Bank, till Evelyn's death in 1996 after which he moved to Tucson. He is survived by three sisters, Loretta, Bertha and Eleanor; as well as three brothers, Harold, Clarence and Clement. He was pre-deceased by Andrew, LeRoy and Jerome. Maynard gave of all his time and resources to many charities; his favorite being, the nuns at Valley of Our Lady in Prarie du Sac, Wisconsin and St Vincent de Paul. Mass of the Resurrection is at St. Francis de Sales Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

WATSON, Ryan Eldon 36, peacefully departed this life on April 26, 2011 in Mesa, Arizona, surrounded by his devoted family and friends, and by the boundless love of scores of those who gathered from all over the state and country to support him. Born October 16, 1974 in Mesa, to Richard Watson Gilda and Jane Lopez Rene, Ryan grew up in Mesa along with his siblings, Travis Watson, Beth Kelly Nick, and Jeffrey Watson Amadea, graduating from Mountain View High School in 1993. He later lived and worked in Phoenix, as an auditor with AIG. Ryan was blessed with insatiable intelligence, endless curiosity, wondrous imagination, and a unique, irreverent sense of humor. No person himself included, human foible, or political situation escaped his rapier wit, leaving us constantly laughing and shaking our heads. he loved the outdoors, hiking, exploring nearly every state, and especially enjoying the soothing beauty of the ocean. Ryan defined the word "friend" lived life fully, and loved his family and friends fiercely. He especially loved his nephews, Alex and Jack Kelly. In sharing Ryan's life and even his dying, he taught us how to live life generously, with humility, fun, compassion, devotion, integrity, courage, grace, and immeasurable love. Ryan, you set the bar high. We will honor you by doing our best to love life as you did, carrying our love for you in our hearts all our days. A memorial celebration to honor Ryan's life will be held at Stonecreek Golf Club, 4435 E. Paradise Village Parkway South, Phoenix, on Sunday, May 8th, from 5:00 - 8:00 Memorial at 6:00. Donations in Ryan's name may be made to Hospice of the Valley, and or to the University of Arizona Foundadtion/Arizona Cancer Center.
