Carlomagno Encinas Lopez

Carlomagno Encinas Lopez 83, devoted husband, father, and educator passed away March 5, 2011. Carl was born in Tucson to Carlomagno Siqueiros Lopez and Luz Encinas on October 16, 1927. He was a fourth generation Tucsonan dating back to the birth in 1834 of his great-grandfather, Juan Sambrano Lopez. Carl attended Mission View, Government Heights, Wakefield and Tucson High School. In high school he excelled in baseball, where he was given the nickname "Scooter." In the summer of 1944, his American Legion team came in second place in the nation. Carl would have continued in the family profession of house painting but J.F. "Pop" McKale gave him an athletic scholarship to the University of Arizona where he lettered in baseball and majored in physical education. After graduating in 1950, he obtained his first teaching job at Roskruge, which was cut short when the Army drafted him. He enrolled in the Officer Candidate School and became a lieutenant. Lt. Lopez was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne, stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On March 29, 1952, he married Emma Regeser, his wife of 58 years (she passed away in August 2010). Together they raised seven children, Carl (Billie), Steven (Leticia), Denise Durazo (Ed), Dennis, Linda Mower (Donald), Albert (Tara) and Ana Lisa Blessing (Todd). Carl had a very successful 30-year career as an educator and administrator in TUSD. Upon his return from the military, Carl was employed at Wakefield Jr. High and then moved to the fifth grade classroom at Drachman. Carl was then promoted and served as Principal at Borton, Drachman and Safford, and as Assistant Principal at Tucson High School. Carl then moved to district-wide administration where he served as Director of Personnel before returning to a principal post at Carson from which he retired in 1983. Being a young retiree, he held many other positions over the years, among them principal at Academic Cotopaxi in Quito Ecuador, and the very first principal of La Luz Academy and Guerrero Middle School. Carl was most proud of his contribution as an educator as he touched the lives of many students and teachers. He also served as the President of the Pima County Hall of Fame and a member of the AARP Arizona Executive Council. With his wife, Emma, Scooter enjoyed a full social life with their many friends, including travel throughout the world. Carl passed away from cancer in his home under the care of his family and hospice. He is survived by his sisters, Artemisa Urias and Josephine Laos, his seven children, 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the UA Hispanic Alumni Scholarship Program, in memory of Carl Lopez, P.O. Box 210109, Tucson, AZ 85721-0109. A Mass will be held in his honor at St. Odelia on Friday, March 18, 2011 at 9:00 a.m., followed by interment at Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

David Hencil Strauser

David Hencil Strauser of Tucson, AZ was born in rural Weatherford, OK on February 2, 1922 and passed away on March 12, 2011 in Tucson at age 89. Visitation will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Chapel, Tucson, AZ. Religious Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at The Cascades of Tucson, 201 N. Jessica Ave. Burial to follow in Weatherford, Oklahoma. David was born to Elijah Hencil and Jewell Mae (Casady) Strauser on their farm, bordering old dirt Route 66, and learned to work hard - even plowing fields behind mules as early as age four. David married Iona Albritton on October 24, 1942 in Clinton, OK, beginning a union that would last 68 years. David served stateside in the US Army Air Forces during, and was honorably discharged in 1946. Daughter, Carolyn Deanna and son, Garry David, were both born in Oklahoma. After working his father's Washita County farm for awhile, David moved his family to Tucson, AZ in August 1948 and built a home on Tucson's south side. He became employed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and worked there as a civil service warehouseman for the next 28 years, often operating the largest forklifts on or near the flight line. During those years, he was elected president of the local chapters of the IUE and the American Federation of Government Employees and successfully negotiated the first exclusive master bargaining agreement between any labor union and Davis-Monthan AFB. He retired in 1977, with a total of 32 years of government service. Greatly influenced by the dedicated life of his father-in-law, Elmer Albritton, David was saved and baptized at about age 27, and became an ordained deacon in the local Missionary Baptist Church. David always believed in honesty and "doing things right" and expected the same from others. He demonstrated his love best through his faithful consistency and unwavering devotion to his wife and family. Never about frills or "keeping up with the Jones's", David was frugal and lived modestly, always aware of growing up in the era of The Great Depression. David and Iona moved to the northeast part of Tucson in 1987. David is preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Strauser; sister-in-law, Vera Strauser and great-niece, Melissa Busch. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Anna Iona; one daughter, Deanna (Larry) Kastens of Hereford, AZ; one son, Garry (Patricia) Strauser of Hot Springs, SD; two granddaughters, Amy (Frank) VanDevender and Julie (Satya) Krishnamurthi; four grandsons, Jayson Kastens, Michael Strauser, Timothy (Tawnya) Strauser and Matthew (Brandi) Strauser as well as 13 great-grandchildren, Abigail, Jackson, Frank IV, Curtis, Steven and Thomas VanDevender, Sanjay, Vijay and Pranay Krishnamurthi and Kynlee, Kellen, Kalli and Kale Strauser; sister-in-law, Juanita Albritton and niece, Patricia Ellis as well as numerous other loving nieces and nephews and great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Although David will be missed by all who knew him, there is complete comfort, certain that he is now at rest in the arms of his Lord and Savior. The family's thanks go to the smiling faces, helping hands, and warm hearts that cared for David through the Tucson medical community and at The Cascades of Tucson and Villa Campana. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be sent to the Christian charity for which you may have a specific passion. Arrangements by J. WARREN FUNERAL SERVICES, Casa Grande, Arizona.

Don Luis Durazo Redondo

Don Luis Durazo Redondo 1921-1996 How quickly a year goes by. Did you get the Cohibas? I paid for "VERY SPECIAL DELIVERY". You and Joe no doubt have made some new friends. I remember what a kick you got out of Tony Curtis dressed in drag in Some Like it Hot. Jean Simmons was so beautiful in Guys and Dolls. No one could sing Stormy Weather like Lena Horne. I'll venture a guess that you still haven't met any lawyers up there, with the exception of Henry Severyn. Driving by El Rio Golf Course the other day, I remember you telling me, that as a kid, back in the 30's you made 25 cents for caddying 18 holes. During what were the early days of the Tucson Open you carried golf bags for Bob Hope and Fred Astaire. Each tipped you 5 dollars. That must have bought a lot of beans and tortillas in those days. A guy came by the other morning asking if I wanted to "get rid " of the Tata truck. I sent him packing before I lost my temper. I'm a year older than you were when you retired from the railroad. No end in sight for me yet pop. Wish I had been as smart as you about these things. When times are tough I miss you most of all. When I was a little boy you comforted me with a hug, you dried by tears and said the magic words, "No lloras mi Rey." My mom is fine and I doubt a day passes when your name does not cross her lips. She is still truckin' all over town in the blue Jimmy. I love you and look forward to seeing you pop, just not too soon. I've got lots of work to do to assure admission. As Winston Churchill once said, "I'm ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is ready for the ordeal of meeting me is another matter." And in the words of Roy Rogers, "Happy Trails To You, Until We Meet Again". Bobby.
