Dr. James "Larry" McBiles

Dr. James "Larry" McBiles It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. Larry McBiles. He passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the age of 54. Larry led the Center for Teacher Success as President and Chief Learning Officer. His contributions to the field of education, both before and during his years with the Center, were extensive. As a veteran Arizona educator, Larry spent much of his professional time and energy studying what research and conventional wisdom had to say about teaching, learning and what it means to "understand." He held a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University. His career included teaching at elementary, middle, secondary and university levels. Larry transitioned from teacher to district administrator to the position of Deputy Associate Superintendent of the Arizona Department of Education. Following his keen interest in science, Larry next took on the role of Director of Education with the Arizona Mining Association where he received the 2005 Medal of Merit by the American Mining Hall of Fame. He worked with Northern Arizona University's Center for Excellence in Education and has served on the faculty of Arizona State University's College of Education. Larry was a frequently-requested state and national consultant for training in the areas of standards-based instructional planning, performance assessment, shared instructional leadership and systemic school improvement. Larry McBiles viewed himself first and foremost as a teacher and also as a lifelong learner. He touched the lives of thousands of teachers and students. Larry is survived by his parents, Brad and Donna McBiles and his brothers, William "Bill" and Scott McBiles, as well as many friends and colleagues. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Francis Xavier on N. Central Ave. in Phoenix on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the Center for Teacher Success, 141 East Palm Lane, Suite 100, Phoenix, AZ 85004 in support of Larry's lifelong work to provide professional development support and services to educators across the state. Ellie Thurman (Elinor) Reichlin

REICHLIN, Ellie (Elinor) Thurman, Ellie's spirit escaped her pained body on March 7, 2011 at the age of 81 following a 16 month struggle with lung cancer. The only child of the late Rose Thurman Dameshek and Dr. William Dameshek, Ellie was born in Brookline, Massachusetts and had lived in St. Louis, Rochester, N.Y., Bloomfield, CT and Boston before moving to southern Arizona 20 years ago. She leaves her husband of nearly 60 years, Dr. Seymour (Si) Reichlin; three children, Seth David, Nyack N.Y., Anne Elise, Ithaca, N.Y., Douglas James, Boulder, CO and four grandchildren, Elijah Abraham Reichlin-Melnick, Aaron Emmanuel Reichlin-Melnick, Simon Ephraim Bohn and Eva Adela Bohn. Ellie was a stellar student at Brookline High School, obtained her BA at Sarah Lawrence College, a Master's degree in Anthropology at the University of Rochester, and a Masters degree in Library Science at Simmons College. She served as the curator of acquisitions at the Harvard Peabody Museum and then was Director of Archives at the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities in Boston. She received national attention in 1976 when she discovered the earliest known photographs of African slaves in America while sorting through a forgotten drawer at the Harvard Peabody Museum, and determined through historical research that they had been taken to support the now discredited theory that Whites and Blacks were created by God as separate species. In her professional role she is remembered by her many students and scholars whose work she helped advance. Most importantly, she is remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother, and by everyone for her humor, keen wit, honesty, charm, joy in life and beautiful spirit. She leaves a space that cannot be filled. There will be a celebration of her life in July near the ocean at Cape Split, ME where the family has spent its summers for 50 years. Contributions can be sent to the University of Arizona Cancer Center in her name. Arrangements by GREEN VALLEY MORTUARY.

Hazel Scott Andrews

Hazel Scott Andrews passed away peacefully on February 27, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona, just as the sun was rising on a glorious, snow-covered morning. We will never again see the miracle of snow in the desert without deep and loving memories of Hazel's beauty and vibrance. Hazel was born in Brownwood, Texas on July 29, 1929, the elder of David Rudolph and Mary Byrd Scott's two children. Her cherished brother, Conner Ross, joined her two years later, and together they energized their sleepy Texas town. Hazel left Brownwood to grace Baylor University with her intelligence and vivacious personality. She married her high school classmate, Jack F. Andrews, and they shared 51 devoted years together. Although they lived in several distinct areas of Texas, Hazel never lost the lovely West Texas twang that characterized her unforgettable voice. In 1964, Hazel and Jack settled in Austin, Texas where she was supermom to five children while distinguishing herself as a real estate broker. She didn't just sell houses, she also became a trusted mentor, friend, and even second mother to her many clients. Hazel had the knack for making time grow by keeping busy, and she made a full and demanding life look easy. She had a relentlessly positive nature, finding the bright side of every situation and exemplifying strength and optimism in the face of life's challenges. She could bring a room to life just by walking in. When not working, corralling her children, and caring for friends and extended family, Hazel excelled at bridge, sewing, cooking, and most anything else she tried. She was an involved member of Austin's Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. Hazel and Jack moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1999 and embraced an active retirement life and new friends at SaddleBrooke. Hazel discovered the joy of travel and the pleasure of golf. She loved her Niners, Red Hatters, book club, unit parties, and lunch group. She also treasured a close church community, serving as a Team Captain on the Altar Guild at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Hazel is survived by her beloved husband, Jack F. Andrews, of Tucson, AZ; daughter, Mary Jane Henley (David) of Tucson; daughter, Jenny Lang (James) of Austin, TX; daughter, Julie Harlan of Austin; son, Scott Andrews (Kristy) of Murphy, TX; daughter-in-law, Kathy Hargrove of Florence, AZ; brother, Conner Scott (Mary) of Arlington, TX; brother-in-law, Jerry Andrews (Lanette) of Dallas, TX; precious grandchildren, Isaac and Luke Henley, Emily and Zach Settles, Joe Harlan and Corey Hall; cherished nieces and nephews and several generations of cousins. She was preceded in death by her elder son, John Scott Hargrove and by her parents. The family thanks wonderful doctors Terry Hargrove and Tenney Kentro, and the exceptionally professional and compassionate physicians and staffs at Northwest Medical Center, Oro Valley Medical Center, and La Rosa Health Care Center for their kind and attentive care. A Memorial Service and celebration of Hazel's life will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip's in The Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson Arizona. She will be cremated and her ashes inurned in the Columbarium at St. Philip's. Those wanting to remember Hazel may consider giving to the ministry that brought her so much friendship and support during her last years: The Altar Guild of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, PO Box 65840, Tucson AZ 85718. Hazel was a true light, a beacon in our lives, and we miss her immensely. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE CREMATION AND BURIAL.

Jeanne Schroeder

Jeanne Schroeder (Dorothy) Jeanne Schroeder, 91, of Tucson, AZ peacefully joined her Lord Jesus on March 5, 2011. She is survived by Bill, her loving husband of 68 years; her brother, Dr. Brian (Monica) McLaughlin of Milwaukee, WI; all of her eight children, 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Jeanne was born in August 27, 1919 in Milwaukee, WI to Lillian and Thomas McLaughlin. She grew up in Shorewood, WI before entering the University of Dayton, where she was a class officer twice, wrote a column for the student newspaper, and was active in the drama society, the mixed chorus, and the literary magazine. Jeanne was listed in College Who's Who in 1940 and was the Pershing Rifles Cadet Queen in 1939 and the Homecoming Queen in 1940. She graduated from UD with honors in 1941. After graduation, Jeanne had a radio show in Dayton and then moved to New York City, where she worked as an insurance investigator. It was in New York that her husband-to-be, Bill, whom she had met at UD and who was then an Army captain stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, courted her. They were married in Dayton on May 1, 1943. Their first child, Bill (Lee) of Atherton, CA, was born in 1944, followed by Tom (Barbara) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Steve (Becky) of South Boston, VA; Mary Clare of Seattle, WA; Joan of Seattle, WA; Anne (John Chevalier) of Cheneyville, LA; Jeannette (Dan Smith) of Hope, IN; and Patty of Hope, IN, who was born in 1961. After World War II, Jeanne and Bill moved to Illinois, where they made their home and raised their children while Bill pursued a career in the construction machinery business. In addition to nurturing her children, Jeanne remained intellectually curious and committed to serving others. She was active in her community and her parish, took up painting, and was particularly pleased to run her first half-marathon at the age of 60. Jeanne and Bill retired to Tucson in 1982, where she was able to more intentionally pursue her passion for learning and reading, and where she continued to paint, jog and go to the gym until she was almost 90. Jeanne was a committed Christian who loved Jesus as her savior and took His message of love deeply into her own heart. In her long-standing desire to be of service to others, she regularly took meals to home-bound elderly, tutored immigrants in English, and was an involved member of St. Odilia Catholic Community (7570 North Paseo Del Norte, Tucson), where a Mass will be held in her memory at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeanne's memory may be sent to the Medical Mission Sisters, 8400 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111, a charity particularly close to her heart, . Fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer for nearly five years, she was viewed by her friends and physicians alike as a marvel for her strength and ability to rebound from the maladies and taxing treatments she underwent. Zachary Smith

Zachary Smith was called home to the Lord February 18, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Zach, as he was known to the many friends who knew him, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1947 and placed in an orphanage. Zach spent his childhood moving from foster home to foster home until he was able to strike out on his own to make a life for himself. After a career in sales, Zach relocated to Tucson where he started a ministry on the lower East Side until advanced diabetes forced him to give up his parish and church activities, and retire to managing a campground. Zach was a strong advocate for the poor and was involved with the community food bank, and spent Sundays serving food to homeless and poor. He enjoyed the outdoors and climate of Arizona. He loved telling stories of his adventures while camping and hiking in the Tucson mountains and prospecting as a hobby until his illness. Zach Smith leaves a wife, Betty of Washington and a son and many friends. Special thanks to the medical staff at UPH University Physicians Healthcare at Kino for their kindness and care of Zach. His wish would be that people help each other. Donations will be welcomed at the Tucson Community Food Bank. For additional information call 520-574-0157 ask for Dale or John.
